We just published a review paper on the state of the art of using beaks to study squid and octopus for Biology and ecology of cephalopods.
Xavier, Jose Carlos, et al. 2022 "The significance of cephalopod beaks as a research tool: an update." Frontiers in Physiology: 2359.
One of our researchers José Nuno Gomes-Pereira is one of the few that still use these techniques that range from classic taxonomy to modern techniques and plenty of hard work.
Led by José Xavier from Universidade de Coimbra, it gathers the top cephalopod researchers and the results from CIAC 2022 in Portugal.
Beak-based ageing is usually treated as a niche method, so it is useful to see the state of the art pulled together in one place — the point about lower beaks preserving readable growth increments is what keeps the approach viable across seasons, and it would help to name the species where it is least reliable. For turning specimen photos into clean visual references, Image 2.5 Sunburst can generate and edit that kind of image from a prompt or an upload, which saves a lot of retouching before anything goes into a paper or a post.
