|30052021| Humpback whale visit

If someone said that we were going to see a humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae) during this expedition, no one from the crew will believe it!

Early morning and the team of Naturalists left to see a group of sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus) that were getting close to Capelinhos Vulcano.

The group was very calm at surface and we manage to get some tails for photo identification.

After seeing the sperm whales we went to look for more wildlife.

Suddently, we spot two blows! A few minutes after we saw the whales and were two humpback whales!

Our first sighting of this species in 2021!

Through photo-identification we know that one of the humpback whales that we saw, was seen in Cape Verde in the year 2012. How cool is that right?!

Ninguém imaginava que iríamos avistar uma baleia de bossa (Megaptera novaeangliae) na expedição de hoje!

Saímos pela manhã com o nosso grupo de Naturalistas, em direção a um grupo de cachalotes (Physeter macrocephalus) que se estavam a aproximar do Vulcão dos Capelinhos.

O grupo esteve sempre bastante calmo à superfície e até conseguimos algumas caudas para foto identificação.

Após os cachalotes mergulharem, fomos à procura de mais vida marinha.

De repente, avistámos dois sopros! Alguns minutos depois conseguimos ver as baleias e apercebemo-nos que eram duas baleias de bossa! O nosso primeiro avistamento desta espécie do ano 2021!

Através do processo de foto identificação, soubemos que uma das baleias que nós avistámos, foi vista em Cabo Verde no ano de 2012.
