Another day, another group of sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus).

Today our expeditions were on the south of Faial and Pico Island.

In the morning the whales were with a hunting behaviour, staying at the surface resting for around 10 minutes and after deep diving and staying underwater for around 40 minutes.

In the afternoon we saw a group of sperm whales that were sleeping.

At first, we saw one, that was in a vertical position, showing only a bit of its head.

Then this one joined a small group, that wasn't far away, also resting.

Some of them were also in a vertical position, others were just horizontal and resting.

A study that was published in 2008 by Miller et al., found that the sperm whales would spend 7% of their day in a vertical position near the surface, taking a nap of 10 to 15 minutes. They believe that sperm whales might be one of the world's least sleep-dependent animals (https://doi.org/10.1016/j.cub.2007.11.003).

Mais um dia, mais um grupo de cachalotes (Physeter macrocephalus).

As expedições de hoje foram tanto a sul da ilha do Faial como a sul da ilha do Pico.

Na expedição da manhã observámos cachalotes que estavam com um comportamento de caça, estando à superficíe durante 10 minutos, conseguindo assim oxigenarem os músculos para posteriormente fazerem os seus mergulhos profundos de 40 minutos ou mais.

Na expedição da tarde avistámos um grupo de cachalotes que estavam a dormir.

Primeiro avistámos um cachalote, que estava numa posição vertical, mostrando apenas um pouco da sua cabeça.

Depois este cachalote, juntou-se a um pequeno grupo que também estava em descanso.

Neste grupo tínhamos alguns cachalotes numa posição vertical e outros estavam na horizontal.

Um estudo publicado a 2008 por Miller et al, refere que os cachalotes passam 7% do seu dia numa posição vertical perto da superficíe, dormindo por 10 a 15 minutos. Também referem que os cachalotes são um dos animais menos dependentes do sono, a nível mundial. Veja aqui o artigo (https://doi.org/10.1016/j.cub.2007.11.003).
