|24-06-2019 pm| Socializing Sperm whales in the South of Faial, Azores

The first cetaceans that we saw were Common dolphins (Delphinus delphis) with Cory's shearwaters (Calonectris borealis).

The Sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus) where hard to find. But with the help of the lookout "Torrão" that spotted a whale jumping at the distance, with our hydrophone we managed to find the pod 10nm from shore and observe 4 different females.

The first two animals came up to the surface near our boat, they got together and started socializing, showing parts of the tail and head, tansiting afterwards.

Another Sperm whale came to the surface and crossed in front of our boat.

After it, the forth whale came up allowing to get a close look and collect imagery to identify the animal.

We went back to Horta and stoped for another pod of Common dolphins. It was a long afternoon under hot sun but our efford had its reward!
