|09-08-2019 5pm| Sperm whales and spectacular Atlantic-spotted dolphins

Still in the South of Faial, as the other two expeditions of the day, this trip was a bit more special.

Few minutes after leaving Horta, a small pod of at least 2 Mesoplodons sp. crossed our boat. We found them afterwards but unfortunately they were far from us.

When we reached the group of Sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus), they were diving. We could watch some of the adults and juveniles of the group and we took pictures for photo-identification.

Once the whales went down for 45 minutes, we moved towards a big pod of Atlantic-Spotted dolphins (Stenella frontalis). It left us speachless. The pod had more than 80 individuals and they were swimming fast and showing up very near the boat. It was a great encounter.

You will find the pictures than our crew of researchers Maria and Zé Nuno took during the activity. We are glad that you enjoyed.

Thank you for choosing Naturalist.pt.
