|13092020| A morning with 5 different species!

Again to the north! But today we were closer to #SãoJorgeisland and #Picoisland .

Today our first sighting was a big sei whale (Balaenoptera borealis), these whales can go up to 15/16 m of length. This species is normally seen in the Azores during summer and there isn't a lot of information about their migratory routes, however, a tagged sei whale that was seen in the Azores was also seen in the Labrador sea, between Canada and Greenland (Romagosa et al. 2015).

Together with the whale were our lovely spotted dolphins (Stenella frontalis). They were quite active, interacting with each other and doing some acrobatic jumps.

After we went to see a group of pilot whales (Globicephala sp.). The group was big, maybe around 30 animals, but they were dispersed. In the middle of the group that was close to us, we had several calves. Also in the middle of the pilot whales were 1 bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus).

And we got to see 2 sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus) diving and showing their tails!

Na expedição de hoje fomos outra vez para o norte! Mas hoje ficámos muito perto da #ilhadeSãoJorge e da #ilhadoPico.

O primeiro avistamento de hoje foi uma baleia sardinheira (Balaenoptera borealis), estas baleias conseguem chegar a 15/16 metros de comprimento. Esta espécie é normalmente avistada nos Açores durante o verão e existe muito pouca informação sobre as suas rotas migratórias, contudo, uma baleia sardinheira, a que foi colocado um dispositivo de satélite, foi vista nos Açores e no mar do Labrador, entre o Canáda e a Gronelândia (Romagosa et al. 2015).

Juntamente com a baleia estava um grupo dos amigáveis golfinhos pintados (Stenella frontalis). Estavam bastante ativos, interagindo uns com os outros e a realizar saltos acrobáticos.

Depois fomos ver um grupo de baleias piloto (Globicephala sp.). O grupo tinha à volta de 30 animais mas encontravam-se bastante dispersos. No meio de um grupo que estava mais perto de nós, haviam várias crias e encontrámos também um golfinho roaz (Tursiops truncatus).

Nesta expedição também conseguimos avistar dois cachalotes (Physeter macrocephalus) que mergulharam e mostraram as suas caudas!
