|29-06-2019| 4 different species of cetaceans in the Azores

The morning started with a pod of Risso's dolphins (Grampus griseus) just off Monte da Guia, close to Horta, Faial Island. The pod was resting, transiting very slowly.

A manhã começou com um grupo de Golfinhos de Risso (Grampus griseus) bem perto da Reserva Natural do Monte da Guia, junto à cidade da Horta, Ilha do Faial. O grupo estava praticamente em repouso, transitando muito lentamente e com longos períodos de submersão.

There were around 20 animals, likely a mixed group with males, females, andat least two juveniles.

O grupo continha de 18-23 animais, aparentemente um grupo misto de machos e fêmeas com pelo menos dois juvenis.

2 Risso's dolphins

We head to a pod of Sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus). Three whales were transiting, and shallow diving and a fourth was in the area shallow diving as well. The light was great, so we managed to get a good view at the animals, and collect imagery for identifying them.

Prosseguimos para um grupo de cachalotes (Physeter macrocephalus), Três baleias alinharam-se permitind oque recolhêssemos imagens do seu corpo, úteis na sua identificação. Uma quarta baleia também se encontrava na zona, também ela a efectuar mergulhos pouco profundos.

More species of dolphins were in the area: Atlantic-spoted dolphins (Stenella coeruleoalba).

Outras espécies de cetáceos encontravam-se na área, neste caso os Golfinhos pintados (Stenella frontalis)

The pod had about 40 animals and plenty of sub-adults, and they were up to interacting with the boat. Finally we left them as the pod moved towards the open ocean.

O grupo continha cerca de 40 animais e muitos sub-adultos assim como crias. Os "pintados" como lhes chamamos, estavam muito interactivos como é costume com esta espécie! Por fim deixámos o grupo, que continuou a deslocar-se para o mar aberto.

To end this amazing tour we headed for one Sei whale (Balaenoptera borealis) that was absolutely calm in the South of Faial and Pico islands.

Para finalizar esta expedição incrível, dirigímo-nos para uma baleia de barbas, uma Sardinheira (Balaenoptera borealis), que estava absolutamente calma a sul da ilha do Pico.

This animal was about 14 m long and we believe had been eating recently as it was even almost interacting with the boats.

O animal tinha cerca de 14m de comprimento e acreditamos que se estivesse estado a alimentar, pela forma extremamente calma e errática como se deslocava, quase que interagindo com o barco, apreciando que nos interessasse-mo por ela.

By inspecting the flukeprints of the whale, we found a piece of skin and we collected it. A very useful sample for our research adding to the photo-identification.

Ao investigarmos a marca que deixa quando mergulha, a "pegada da baleia", encontramos vários pedaços de pele. Tratam-se de amostras extremamente úteis para a nossa investigação, complementando a foto-identificação.

Our explorers were very happy with the sightings of this morning. There is an expression, that you come to see the whales in the Azores and you take home the dolphins, however with the skin sample, we did took home the whale as well!

Os nossos Naturalistas estavam muito felizes com as observações desta manhã. Há uma expressão que diz "que se vem aos Açores ver baleias, e leva-se para casa os golfinhos", de facto os pintados "deram show", mas com a amostra de pele recolhida, também levámos a baleia para casa!
