Today the weather and sea conditions were perfect!

No wind, really calm sea and bright sun!

In the morning we talked to the spotter on the north of #Faialisland and he said he already had seen some sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus). So after receiving this information we went to pick the team of Naturalists that were waiting in Madalena, #Picoisland.

With the Naturalists on board, we went to look for the sperm whales!

Before arriving to the sperm whales area, we saw a group of spotted dolphins (Stenella frontalis) super friendly, they came really close to the boat and we saw some really tiny babies :) The babies of this species don't have any spots in their bodies, only when they get older, after 1 year old, they start to acquire the spots.

After this lovely moment, we went to the sperm whales. At first, we saw one close to our boat and there was also another one a bit farther away, in the direction of Pico. Both of them dove and showed their tails, which means that they deep dove and they will spend quite a while underwater, the average time for the dive is around 40 minutes.

When we were waiting for them to come up to the surface, we saw a big pod of common dolphins (Delphinus delphis), at least more than 100 animals, also with a lot of babies! At this time of the year is quite common to find babies since their reproduction period goes between June and September.

A few minutes after seeing the common dolphins, the sperm whales appear at the surface. First, we saw one, then another joined and another and another! We had 4 sperm whales right in front of our boat.

Hoje as condições de tempo e mar estavam perfeitas!

Não havia vento, o mar estava calmo e o sol brilhava!

De manhã bem cedo falámos com o vigia que estava no norte da #ilhadoFaial e ele disse que já tinha avistado cachalotes (Physeter macrocephalus). Depois de termos a confirmação da localização fomos buscar um grupo de Naturalistas que estavam à nossa espera na Madalena, #ilhadoPico.

Já com o grupo de Naturalistas a bordo fomos à procura dos cachalotes!

Antes de chegarmos à área dos cachalotes, avistámos um grupo de golfinhos pintados (Stenella frontalis) muito amigáveis, que vieram muito perto do barco e vimos crias super pequenas :) As crias desta espécie não têm pintas no corpo, pois apenas de 1 ano de idade é que começam a ganhar as suas pintas.

Depois de este momento incrível, fomos então aos cachalotes. Primeiro vimos um cachalote que estava mais perto de nós e um que estava um pouco mais longe, na direção da ilha do Pico. Os dois mergulharam e mostraram as suas caudas, o que significa que fizeram o seu mergulho profungo e vão ficar debaixo de água por volta de 40 minutos.

Enquanto esperávamos, vimos um grupo grande de golfinhos comuns (Delphinus delphis), eram pelo menos 100 animais, com muitas crias! A esta altura do ano é bastante comum encontrarmos crias nos grupos, pois a época de reprodução decorre ente Junho e Setembro.

Após alguns minutos de ver os golfinhos comuns, os cachalotes vieram à superficíe. O avistamento começou apenas com um cachalote e acabou com quatro, mesmo em frente ao nosso barco!
