|22092020| Our first fin whale of the season

Ready for another adventure?!


Today we went to see the animals in the south of #PicoIsland. Our first sighting was a group of bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus). The group was big, more than 20 animals but they were very dispersed. This species is resident in the Azores archipelago so we can see them all year.


During the sighting of the bottlenose dolphins, the spotter let us know that there were some baleen whales close to Faial, but as soon as we start to head that direction another boat, that was close by, spot a baleen whale! So we change our direction and we went to see this whale. It was a fin whale (Balaenoptera physalus)! Our first fin whale of the season!

The fin whales are the only whale with an asymmetrical pigmentation, their rostrum on the left side is grey and on the right side is white. This different coloration makes it easier for its identification.


Already ending our tour we spot a huge pod of common dolphins (Delphinus delphis) mixed with some striped dolphins (Stenella frontalis). As we already mentioned in other posts these groups of mixed-species are quite common.

Preparados para mais uma aventura?!


Hoje o nosso destino foi o sul da #ilhadoPico. O primeiro avistamento foi um grupo de golfinhos roazes (Tursiops truncatus). O grupo tinha mais de 20 animais, mas estavam dispersos. Os roazes são uma espécie residente no arquipélago dos Açores, por isso podemos vê-los durante todo o ano.


Durante o avistamento dos roazes, o vigia avisou-nos que haviam baleias de barbas perto do Faial, mas assim que mudámos a nossa direção, outro barco que estava a ver os roazes avistou uma baleia de barbas! Por isso mudámos de direção, mais uma vez, e fomos ao encontro da baleia. Era uma baleia comum (Balaenoptera physalus)! A nossa primeira baleia comum da temporada! A baleia comun é a única baleia que tem uma pigmentação assimétrica, na cabeça a parte esquerda é cinzenta enquanto a parte direita é branca. Esta coloração distinta ajuda bastante na identificação da espécie.


Já no fim da expedição vimos um grupo grande de golfinhos comuns (Delphinus delphis) misturados com alguns golfinhos riscados (Stenella frontalis). Como já mencionámos em outras publicações das expedições, grupos com várias espécies é comum de acontecer, principalmente com as espécies mencionadas anteriormente.
