|11072020| The Sultan whale and "show off" dolphins Faial Azores

Early morning, the sun is shining and Naturalists ready for the adventure, after a long quarantine.

Our spotter already had seen some sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus) so after everyone got their equipment we went to look for them!

When we arrived we saw a big male that after a little bit joined a group of 4 females and two calves. The males' sperm whales travel through the Atlantic, being found in higher latitudes during the winter and in the summer they came to #Azores for the mating season. They tend to travel alone but sometimes they can travel in small groups.

After all of the elements of the group deep dive, we went to see a pod of spotted #dolphins (Stenella frontalis) that were nearby.

And what a show it was! First we saw some animals hunting a bowl of fish, together with some cory's shearwater (Calonectris borealis). After having their bellies full they started socializing with each other resulting in some acrobatic jumps. If you look at the photos of the spotted dolphins you will notice that a lot of them don't have spots, but that is okay! When they are young they don't have any spots, they acquire their spots as they get older.

Hoje começamos o dia cedo, com o sol a brilhar e a nossa equipa de Naturalistas pronta para a aventura após uma longa quarentena.

O vigia já tinha avistado um grupo de cachalotes (Physeter macrocephalus), depois de todos estarem devidamente equipados, fomos ao seu encontro.

Quando chegámos avistamos um macho grande que se juntou a um grupo de 4 fêmeas e duas crias. Os cachalotes macho navegam pelo Atlântico, podendo ser encontrados em altitudes mais altas durante o inverno e no verão vêm aos #Açores para a época de reprodução. Eles, por norma, fazem esta migração sozinhos mas por vezes podem fazer pequenos grupos.

Depois de todos mergulharem, fomos avistar um grupo de golfinhos pintados (Stenella frontalis) que estavam perto.

Foi um avistamento incrível! Primeiro vimos alguns animais a caçarem um bola de peixe, juntamento com vários cagarros (Calonectris borealis). Depois de terem comido tudo aquilo que queriam começaram a socializar resultando em saltos acrobáticos! Se virem as fotografias da expedição de hoje vão se aperceber que grande parte dos golfinhos não têm pintas nenhumas, mas não se preocupem! Os animais mais jovens não têm praticamente pintas nenhumas, eles vão adquirindo-as à medida que crescem.
