In the afternoon expedition, we went to the same location that we were in the morning expedition.

It was the same group of sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus), they were a bit more spread and they were with a hunting behavior, which means deep-diving, coming to the surface for around 10 minutes, and deep-diving again.

Between seeing two different sperm whales we found at the surface remains of a sperm whale meal! We found a part of a deep-sea octopus, we believe it was a Haliphron atlanticus. We brought the remains to our lab so we could take some samples.

This afternoon we also got to see two sei whales (Balaenoptera borealis) that were traveling at an average/fast speed. We can see this species either in the spring or summer months.

Na expedição da tarde fomos para a mesma zona, continuámos com o incrível Vulcão dos Capelinhos como paisagem!

Vimos o mesmo grupo de cachalotes, mas agora estavam um pouco mais dispersos e com comportamento de caça, ou seja, faziam mergulhos profundos, que duravam mais ou menos 40 minutos, depois regressavam à superficíe ficando 10 minutos e voltavam a mergulhar.

Entre o avistamento de dois cachalotes diferentes encontrámos restos da refeição de um cachalote! Encontrámos uma parte de um polvo de profundidade, Haliphron atlanticus. Recolhemos o resto do animal e trouxémos para o nosso laboratório para conseguirmos recolher algumas amostras.

Também avistámos duas baleias sardinheiras (Balaenoptera borealis) que estavam em navegação. Conseguimos avistar esta espécie tanto nos meses primaveris e de verão.
