New day, new adventure! Today we found a group of sperm #whales (Physeter macrocephalus) between #Faial and #Pico. At first they were a bit shy and doing some shallow dives. Nonetheless, we still manage to see a calf! The sperm whales when they born they can have 3.5 to 4.5 meters long and weight about 1 ton. Big baby right?! This morning we had bad weather conditions. However, people wanted to try and we succeeded. Thanks to the lookout, we could reach a big group of 150-200 Atlantic spotted dolphins (Stenella frontalis) that were feeding in the North of Faial. We could see a small subgroup of them socializing too. Lots of seabirds like seagulls and Cory's shearwaters (Calonectris borealis) were taking advantage of the fish too. On this day we saw a pod of Sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus) in the South of the channel between Faial and Pico islands. In the morning the whales were in pairs and trios. Despite one breach far away, we saw the animals resting at the surface or shallow diving. In the afternoon, they had gone altogether in one single group of 6-7 individuals composed of adult females (one of them with a very particular white patch), juveniles and a small calf. This afternoon the Sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus) that were found by the lookout were still in the South of the islands but farther away. A pod of Atlantic spotted dolphins (Stenella frontalis) added a bit of movement to the expedition: the whales were shallow diving but the dolphins were friendly and jumping out of the water. When the Sperm whales shallow dive, they don't show the tail. But luckily we could see it as one of the animals dived deep. Thank you for joinin

On this day we were lucky to see a pod of Sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus). The animals didn't show the flukes as they didn't dive deep, but while socializing, some of them showed a part of the tail. Thank you all for joining our team. After a week of bad weather conditions, finally, we went out to the ocean. The Sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus) were far away towards the South of Pico island. This morning we went towards the North of Faial to see a group of Sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus). Some animals were shallow diving. The group was composed by adult females, one of them with a very small calf, and at least one juvenile. In the area, there was a small pod of less than 10 Atlantic spotted dolphins (Stenella frontalis). The pod was composed mainly by juvenils and calves: it was a nursery group.
