|08082020am| Alongside Risso's dolphins
|ENG| Early morning and our experienced spotter, in the south of #PicoIsland, already had some sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus) under his guard. So after all the naturalists are properly equipped we went straight to the area where the sperm whales were spotted. We saw a beautiful tail when the sperm whale deep dove. When they deep dive they leave a bubble, it is like their footprint, at the surface and sometimes they leave behind some skin. Slowly, we got closer to the b

|03082020| Baby sperm whale
|ENG| Today it was a windy day! Today we went to the north of #Faialisland to look for sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus) :) On our way to the sperm whales that the spotter was seeing we saw 2 blows! We got closer to the area where we saw the blows, at first we saw a sperm whale with more or less 8 meters long (they can measure 15 to 18 meters) and after a few minutes a baby sperm whale appears! The baby sperm whales normally are with their mom or they can also stay with t

|01082020| New month, new adventures!
|ENG| Definitely, a wonderful way to start this new month! Weekend with a sunny day and off we go to a new adventure. When we arrived in the area where our spotter saw a group of sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus) the animals where deep diving, they can be on average 40 minutes underwater, so we had to wait a little bit. After a few minutes, we saw our first blow! We saw 4 sperm whales :) When we were waiting for a sperm whale to come to the surface we spotted a group of p

|28082020| Huge pod of common dolphins
|ENG| Another day with a flat sea! Early morning and our spotter already had a position for a group of sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus), so we went straight to find them. We saw two different sperm whales and we believe one of them was pregnant! The sperm whales have only one baby at a time and the gestation period can last between 13 to 15 months. Close to the coast, we saw a huge pod of common dolphins (Delphinus delphis) with a lot of tiny babies, maybe with just a fe

|27072020| Active bottlenose dolphins
|ENG| Today we had almost no wind, so we had almost a flat sea! We saw a small group of bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus). In the beginning, they approached the boat but then they kept their "social distance" rule from humans. After a while, they start to be more active, they performed some jumps and it was also possible to see some sexual behaviour (e.g. chasing each other and rubbing their bellies). Then we left the group of dolphins and went to look for the biggest

|24072020| 6 different species in one trip!
What a day! Today we were amazingly surprised by 6 different species and all of that in one morning! Our spotter had seen some whales and our Naturalists were more than ready, so we went for our adventure! First we saw a small group of risso's dolphin (Grampus griseus), with 10 to 12 animals. After we saw 2 big sei whales (Balaenoptera borealis) wandering around, maybe looking for some food. Then in our way to see a sperm whale (Physeter macrocepahlus) that our spotter had f

|21072020| Biggest toothed whale
The sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus) are one amazing species to look at. Today we could see at least 3 different indivuals. The tails will be unique for each individual, working has their fingerprints. When they go explore the deep waters they always show their tail. Besides seeing the biggest toothed whale we saw friendly groups of spotted dolphins (Stenella frontalis). In our morning expedition we also saw a loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta) and in our afternoon trip

|20072020| Super curious sei whale juvenile!
A sunny afternoon calls for an expedition at sea! With the whales on sight, by our spotter, and all the Naturalists properly equipped, we went to look for the whales :) On our way to the whales, we were surprised by a group of spotted dolphins (Stenella frontalis) and then by a group of bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) with 40 animals, including a lot of babies! A lot of good distractions on our way to the whales :) After seeing the dolphins we saw a big sei whale (Ba

|18072020| First Sei whale of the season!
An amazing way to start the weekend! After a windy cross between #Faial and #Pico we encounter the sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus) at the south of Pico. We saw at least 5 different animals, where one was a calf probably nursing! When we were seeing the sperm whales, suddenly a small group, 4 animals, of bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) appear. Unfortunately, we didn't get any good photos of this species. Our experienced spotter said that he had found some baleen

|13072020| Day full of emotions
Today it was one of those days where aren't words to explain! After a bumpy ride through the canal between #Faial and #Pico, we were waiting for the sperm #whales (Physeter macrocephalus), that were spotter had seen before, to come up. For our surprise suddenly our spotter saw a group of false killer whales (Pseudorca crassidens) just a few meters away from our position. We had 6 to 10 animals around our boat hunting some fish that were hiding under a box. And we also saw a r
