|13072020| Day full of emotions

Today it was one of those days where aren't words to explain!

After a bumpy ride through the canal between #Faial and #Pico, we were waiting for the sperm #whales (Physeter macrocephalus), that were spotter had seen before, to come up.

For our surprise suddenly our spotter saw a group of false killer whales (Pseudorca crassidens) just a few meters away from our position.

We had 6 to 10 animals around our boat hunting some fish that were hiding under a box. And we also saw a recently born calf!

This species is not seen very often and little is known about their presence in the Azores.

After this amazing sighting, we went to look for some sperm whales!

We saw four different animals, at least one was a juvenile. All of them deep-dive so we took photos of their tails for posterior photo ID.

During this time we also so a loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta) although we did not manage to collect it for research purposes.

On our way back to the harbour we were surprised by a big pode, around 20 animals, of bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) and at the very end we also saw a group of Risso's dolphin (Grampus griseus) with some older animals. We know they are older because their body is practically all white. When their born they have a greyish colour and due to their sensitive skin during their life they acquire a lot of scars, giving them the colour white.

Thank you to everyone that joined us! Enjoy and share our photos from the expedition.

See you soon!
