A blast of water coming from the surface of the water is always good news for whale watchers. Sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus) have a front-left oriented blow due to their front left located and S-shaped blowhole. It was a unexpected sunny afternoon. The sighting started with a pod of females Sperm whales (Physeter mactocephalus) in the South of the island of Faial. The 5 females observed were part of the to the same pod we have been observe in the last weeks. The animals kept the diving behaviour, that is mainly made to prey deep cephalopods species (octopus and squids). Each animal can be identified trough it's fluke (tail) morphology, the pictures and then analysed by our researcher

The morning was full of activity. 11 Sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus) were found in the South of Faial island. We could see many sperm whales diving close to the houses south of Faial. There was a lot of Cory's Shearwaters (Calonectris borealis). These birds run on the surface of the water before taking off. There was a huge pod of over 150 Striped dolphins (Stenella coeruleoalba). The afternoon was full of Sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus) and dolphins. The sperm whales belong to a pod that has been for the last three weeks south of Faial. Today these have were having the same diving behavior than in the morning.
