Windy morning today!

Our skipper talked to our spotter and he had already seen some sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus)! So we did a small briefing explaining the wonders of the Azores and then, after equipped the team of Naturalists, we went off to our adventure.

On our way to the sperm whales, another boat, that was nearby, saw a sei whale (Balaenoptera borealis)! As soon as we heard sei whale on the radio we changed our course and went to see the baleen whale.

When we arrived we had to wait a few minutes to spot the whale. When we saw it we realize it was a juvenile do to the smaller size.

This juvenile was very curious and approached the boat two times! Passing close to us just by a few centimeters.

Then we went to the sperm whales.

When we arrive in the area the sperm whales were still diving, so we used our hydrophone to relocate ourselves in order to be close to the whale when it surfaces. And then it appears!

We saw the whale for a few minutes and then it dove! We took some photographs of the tail and in the afternoon we went to check if we already had that tail in our sperm whale catalogue.

It is a match! The whale that we saw today has already been spotted exactly two months ago! Photo identification is a good method to track whales and dolphins. Pretty cool right?!

Hoje foi uma manhã ventosa!

O capitão falou com o vigia e este já tinha avistado cachalotes (Physeter macrocephalus)! Fizemos uma pequena apresentação a explicar as maravilhas dos Açores e depois equipámos a equipa de Naturalistas e partimos à aventura.

A caminho dos cachalotes, outro barco que estava perto avistou uma baleia sardinheira (Balaenoptera borealis)! Assim que ouvimos baleia sardinheira na rádio, mudámos a nossa direção e fomos ver esta baleia de barbas.

Quando chegámos tivemos que esperar alguns minutos até conseguirmos ver a baleia. Quando a vimos apercebemo-nos que era um juvenil. O juvenil era bastante curioso e aproximou-se do barco duas vezes! Passou mesmo perto de nós, apenas a alguns centímetros de distância,

Depois voltamos então à nossa ideia inicial, ir ver os cachalotes.

Os cachalotes ainda estavam a mergulhar por isso usámos o hidrofone para nos colocarmos na melhor possível.

Vimos um cachalote por algum tempo e depois ele mergulhou! Tirámos fotografias da cauda e durante a tarde fomos verificar se este animal já pertencia ao nosso catálogo.

E tivémos uma correspondência! O cachalote que vimos hoje, já o tinhamos visto há exatamente 2 meses atrás. O método de foto identificação é um método incrível para conseguir perceber a movimentação tanto de baleias como golfinhos. Incrível não é?!
