|29052021| Massive pod of common dolphins

Today at sea we had the perfect conditions, the sea was completely flat. The only thing missing was the sun!

On our way to see a group of sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus), we found a small group of common dolphins (Delphinus delphis) that were very playful.

We stayed only for a few minutes because the sperm whales were getting further away.

When we arrived we saw 1 and then 2 and then 3 sperm whales. In the end, we saw 5 adults and one calf, all side by side. Females and calves will stay around temperate and warm water all year-round, only the males will migrate between north and south.

Before we started our journey back all of them deep dive, so we got to see the tails of them all! Now, is the time to add these photos to our catalogue.

After seeing the sperm whales we saw a massive pod of common dolphins! We were completely surrounded!

They were socializing, traveling and feeding. At one point we put our hydrophone on the water and it was an incredible moment, there were so many whistles and vocalizations! The perfect way to end this morning expedition.

Hoje o mar estava perfeito! A única coisa que faltava era o sol ;)

A caminho de ir ver um grupo de cachalotes (Physeter macrocephalus), encontrámos um pequeno grupo de golfinhos comuns (Delphinus delphis) que estavam bastante ativos a nível social.

Contudo, ficámos pouco tempo pois os cachalotes estavam a ficar cada vez mais longe.

Chegámos ao local do grupo dos cachalotes, começámos por ver 1, depois 2 e depois 3 cachalotes adultos. No fim, ficámos a ver 5 cachalotes adultos e uma cria, todos lado a lado. As crias e as fêmeas tendem a ficar em zonas temperadas e tropicais durante todo o ano, apenas os machos fazem migrações entre norte e zonas mais a sul.

Antes de começarmos o nosso regresso, todos os animais fizeram o seu mergulho profundo, mostrando as suas caudas! Agora é a altura de identificá-las e adicionar ao nosso catálogo.

Avistámos mais uma vez golfinhos comuns, mas desta vez era um grupo enorme, com 1000 indivíduos! Estávamos completamente cercados por golfinhos comuns.

Durante o avistamento colocámos o nosso hidrofone na água foi um momento incrível, onde pudemos ouvir várias vocalizações! A melhor maneira para terminar a nossa expedição.
