A morning full of spotted dolphins (Stenella frontalis)!

This morning was a smooth sea, which means good conditions to spot some wildlife!

Before finding our first group of spotted dolphins we saw a shark not very far away from our boat! First, we saw the tip of its dorsal fin, and then we could see its silhouette as it got closer to the boat. Unfortunately, we couldn't confirm which species was, but in the Azores it is possible to see the blue shark (Prionace glauca), the shortfin mako shark (Isurus oxyrinchus) and the hammerhead shark (Sphyrna mokarran).

Then we saw our first group of spotted dolphins!

They immediately approached the boat and stayed with us for a while.

After we went to see another group of spotted dolphins. But this one, was much bigger, having more than 100 individuals. Funny thing, the behaviour was completely different. The first group was calmer, traveling at a low speed, but the second group was much more active, we could see them feeding, socializing and porpoising!

During our trip, we also saw a loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta)! It is the species of turtle that we see often in the Azores. They come to this area when they only have a few centimeters long and stay around until they are strong enough to go back to the beach where they born.

Uma manhã cheia de golfinhos pintados (Stenella frontalis)!

Esta amanhã o mar estava calmo, sem vento, ou seja, boas condições para encontrarmos vida marinha!

Antes de encontrarmos o nosso primeiro grupo de golfinhos pintados vimos um tubarão, não muito longe do nosso barco! Primeiro, vimos a sua barbatana dorsal e depois conseguimos ver a sua silhueta à medida que se aproximava do barco. Infelizmente não conseguimos confirmar a espécie, mas nos Açores é possível observar tubarão azul (Prionace glauca), anequim (Isurus oxyrinchus) e tubarão martelo (Sphyrna mokarran).

Depois vimos o nosso grupo de golfinhos pintados! Assim que chegámos eles aproximaram-se e ficaram connosco.

Fomos ver outro grupo de golfinhos pintados, mas este era bastante maior com mais de 100 indivíduos. O comportamento foi totalmente diferente do grupo anterior. O primeiro estava mais calmo, a navegar a uma baixa velocidade, e este segundo estava bastante mais ativo, pudémos vê-los a alimentarem-se e a socializar.

Na nossa expedição também vimos um tartaruga comum (Caretta caretta)! É a espécie de tartaruga que vemos com maior frequência nos Açores. Ela vêm para esta área apenas com alguns centimentros de comprimento e ficam até ficarem fortes o suficiente para fazerem a viagem até à praia onde nasceram.
