|21052021| Special day with two endangered baleen whales

Today in the Day of Endangered Species, we saw two species of baleen whales, which are classified as endangered in the IUCN red list.

During the morning we saw at least 4 sei whales (Balaenoptera borealis)!!

At one point two of the sei whales came so close to the boat! It was an unforgettable moment!

The sei whale was one of the baleen whales more exploited during modern whaling, being more intensive hunted in the North Atlantic.

On our afternoon trip, we got to see an incredible blue whale (Balaenoptera musculus), super close to the coastline.

The blue whale, such as the sei, was also the target of whaling, leading to the depletion of the North Atlantic population. Since 1966 they are legally protected worldwide, however, still happens illegal hunts.

After seeing the blue whale for a few minutes we went to see a group of common dolphins (Delphinus delphis) that were socializing with each other and also with the boat!

While we were seeing the common dolphins three sei whales appear!

During the entire sighting, they were traveling at a low speed in direction of Faial.

Hoje no dia das Espécies ameaçadas, avistámos duas espécies de baleias de barbas que têm um estatuto ameaçado, de acordo com a lista vermelha da IUCN.

Na nossa saída da manhã conseguimos avistar 4 baleias sardinheiras (Balaenoptera borealis)!

A uma dada altura duas sardinheiras aproximaram-se do barco. Estiveram tão perto, foi um momento incrível!

A baleia sardinheira é uma das espécies de baleias de barbas que foi bastante explorada com a baleação moderna, sendo exaustivamente caçada no Atlântico Norte.

Na nossa saída da tarde, avistámos uma incrível baleia azul (Balaenoptera musculus)!

Tal como a baleia sardinheira, a baleia azul também foi alvo da baleação, tendo causado um enorme decréscimo no número populacional. Desde 1966, a baleia azul é protegida a nível mundo, contudo ainda ocorrem caças ilegais.

Depois de avistarmos a baleia azul, fomos ver um grupo de golfinhos comuns (Delphinus delphis) que estavam a socializar entre eles e com o barco!

Enquanto estávamos com os golfinhos, apareceram 3 baleias sardinheiras!

As baleias tiveram sempre em navegação, com direção ao Faial.
