|20230424| Amazing Sperm whales!

What a great trip! Thank you for supporting our research and helping us collect data on sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus) and common dolphins (Dephinus delphis).

In the morning, we traveled to the north of Pico to find a small pod of female sperm whales with a calf. They were feeding and dived to the depth searching for prey, allowing us to see their beautiful tail. What a great sight! We also saw a pod of common dolphins as we traveled back doing bow riding near the boat and observed Portuguese Man O’ War (Physalia physalis), the most toxic invertebrate on our coast!

In the afternoon, we saw sperm whales transiting and feeding, and a loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta) was brought to the boat for research purposes, allowing us to collect data on its size, geographic position, and condition.
