|16102020| Whale shark followed by a group of chunky bottlenose dolphins

Today was another lucky day, where we could see the biggest fish ever, the whale shark (Rhincodon typus). This last month has been crazy with whale shark sightings! Every day we get surprised by their presence so close to the coast and for staying this long in this area (south of Pico island).

We also could see a group of bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus). It was a small group of no more than 15 animals. The group was very active, interacting a lot with each other and with the boat as well.

Right before we arrive at the marina, we spotted some birds flying around so we went to check it out, and it was the best thing that we did! Under the birds were a feeding frenzy, with a lot of spotted dolphins (Stenella frontalis) and a lot of bait balls (a lot of fishes that form a ball when are being attacked).

Hoje foi outro dia de sorte, conseguimos avistar mais uma vez o maior peixe do mundo, o tubarão baleia (Rhincodon typus). Este último mês tem sido incrível, temos conseguido avistar tubarões baleia quase todos os dias! É um acontecimento raro, ter estes animais tão a norte e tão perto de costa.

Nesta expedição também conseguimos observar um grupo de golfinhos roazes (Tursiops truncatus). Era um grupo pequeno, com 15 indivíduos. Os animais estavam bastante ativos, interagindo uns com os outros e até mesmo com o barco.

Mesmo antes de chegarmos à marina, avistámos um grupo de aves a voar em círculos (normalmente é indicação de peixe na água) e decidimos arriscar. Foi a melhor escolha que fizemos! Debaixo das aves estava um frenezim de alimentação, com imensos golfinhos pintados (Stenella frontalis) e bolas de peixe (os peixes quando estão a ser atacados juntam-se formar uma bola).
