|10082020| Sperm whales close to home

Today the day started with some clouds and bad light, so it was really difficult for our spotters to find some whales.

But after an hour of waiting, we had good news! Two sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus) sighted and on the south of #Faialisland, close to home!

When we arrived at the area we saw at first two, then three and then four!

One sperm whale that was a bit more far away was the first to deep dive and then three whales that were together and close to the boat, dove all of them at the same time. Three cool flukes!

The photos from the tails are going to be added to our photo ID catalogue, so we can figure out if these whales are seen here in the Azores for a long time or if they are new in the area.

The sperm whales dove and we went to see a group of striped dolphins (Stenella coeruleoalba). They were so fast!

The dolphins were not very comfortable with us so with didn't stay long.

After the dolphins, we went to see more sperm whales! At least we saw more 4 different animals. It was full of sperm whales!

Hoje o dia começou com muitas nuvens e com uma luz que não ajuda em nada os nossos vigias.

Mas depois de termos ficado uma hora à espera, tivemos boas notícias! Dois cachalotes (Physeter macrocephalus) foram avistados no sul da #ilhadoFaial, mesmo perto de casa!

Quando chegamos à área vimos primeiro dois animais e depois três e depois quatro!

O primeiro cachalote que vimos estava um pouco longe do nosso barco e foi o primeiro a mergulhar. Os outros três cachalotes estavam mais perto de nós e mergulharam todos ao mesmo tempo. 3 barbatanas caudais lindas!

As fotografias das caudas vão ser adicionadas ao nosso catálogo de foto-identificação, para que possamos perceber se estes cachalotes são vistos nos Açores já há algum tempo ou se são novos nesta área.

Depois de os cachalotes terem mergulhado fomos ver um grupo de golfinhos riscados (Stenella coeruleoalba). Eles são tão rápidos!

Os golfinhos não estavam muito confortáveis connosco então ficamos apenas alguns minutos.

Ao deixarmos os golfinhos, fomos ver mais cachalotes! Vimos pelo menos mais 4 cachalotes diferentes. Hoje o sul do Faial estava cheio de cachalotes!
