|23082020pm| Rivalry between resident and transient animals

The first species that we saw this afternoon was the bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus). They are big, almost 4 meters length, and more robust dolphins. We think they have a strong personality ;)

After we saw a small group of common dolphins (Delphinus delphis). Comparing to the bottlenose dolphins they are half their size and normally approach the boat more times. We didn't saw this species for quite a while so it was good to see them again :)

Then we went to look for some sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus). Our spotter still didn't have found any sperm whales, so we put our hydrophone to see if we could hear some clicks. Our skipper heard at least two animals!

We readjust our position accordingly the clicks and waited a bit more. Suddenly the spotter saw the sperm whales and we went straight to see them!

They rested at the surface for a few minutes and then both deep dove at the same time. After these two sperm whales, the spotter saw another one nearby.

The sperm whale was also calm at the surface but then some bottlenose arrived and annoyed the whale and soon it dive. Agonistic behaviour between local dolphins and transient animals have been already recorded in the Azores.

Thank you for joining us! Enjoy and share the photos from our expedition.

See you soon!
