|18-06-2019 pm| Sperm whales and hundreds of dolphins in the Azores

Updated: Sep 30, 2019

The afternoon was full of Sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus) and dolphins.

The sperm whales belong to a pod that has been for the last three weeks south of Faial. Today these have were having the same diving behavior than in the morning. Cory's shearwaters (Calonectris borealis) were very active too, surveying the waters south to their colony in the Castelo Branco.

In the afternoon we saw a pod of around 70 Bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus), likely the pod of the two dolphins saw in the morning. They were coming intermitently towards our boat.

The Striped dolphins (Stenella coeruleoalba) observed earlier this day had moved to the South of Pico island so we went there to see them.

The pod was swimming fast.

It was composed by adults, juveniles and calfs. An impressive group with several calfs from 2019, a great sighting of a healthy ocean.
