|01092020| Manta ray surprise

A sunny afternoon and a calm sea waiting for us!

Soon after living the harbour in #Faialisland we spot 2 or 3 bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus). They didn't seem interested in the boat so we let them follow their way and went to look for more dolphins.

The spotter that was in #Picoisland had spotted a big group of pilot whales (Globicephala sp.) so we were on our way to see them.

On the way, we encounter a big group of our lovely spotted dolphins (Stenella frontalis). This species prefers the warm waters, so normally September is the last month that we can see the species in the Azores. Besides the spotties we also saw a small group of common dolphins (Delphinus delphis). This is a resident species so we can found them all year round!

Finally, we got to the pilot whales! As normal in this species, they were very calm at the surface, almost not moving. It was a big group, around 30 animals including calves!

Besides the species of cetaceans, we also saw 2 loggerhead turtles (Caretta caretta). Our company works together with the COSTA project that aims the conservation of the turtles seen in the Azores, one part of their work is to tag the turtles. During this expedition, we managed to catch one and tagged it! Now if someone sees the turtle again we can track its movement!

Already on our way home, we had a surprise of a manta ray (Mobula birostris) passing really close to the boa! It was an incredible moment, the manta ray stayed a few minutes with us, doing some spins! Check the video on our Facebook or Instagram. :)

This species can be found in the open ocean and the Azores are considered an important habitat for their distribution range in the North Atlantic (Sobral and Afonso, 2014).

Thank you for joining us! Enjoy and share the photos from our expedition.

See you soon!
