|31-07-2019| Whale watching Faial expeditions, Azores: Sperm whales and dolphins

Updated: Sep 30, 2019

Today we went towards North in the morning and towards South in the afternoon as whales were found in different geographic locations.

Despite being different pods, Sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus) were in both areas.

During the expedition in the morning, Atlantic spotted dolphins (Stenella frontalis) were obsered in an amazing group!

The common dolphins (Delphinus delphis), regular species in the Azoes waters were observed in the afternoon expedition.

The Sperm whales presented very different behaviors on both expeditions: the group observed in the morning developed shallow diving and deep diving behavior; and the sperm whales found in the South of Pico Island this afternoon where socializing during the entire period that we were allowed to stay.

Some of them crossed close to our boat, very, very close! As mammals, curious, the sound frequencies produced by the boat sometimes make them approach and inspect the boat, mainly juveniles.

You can check some of the pictures that our biologists and researchers Dr. José Nuno and Maria took during the day. Thank you very much for choosing Naturalist.pt.
