Amazing morning with the long-awaited good weather! Thank you for supporting our research and helping us collect data on sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus), bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus), cory's shearwaters (Calonectris borealis), Portuguese man-of-war (Physalia physalis) and a loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta)!
Bottlenose dolphins to start, a small elusive pod just outside Horta harbour, next to Monte da Guia.
News came in from the north, where sperm whales were seen from far and off we went, guided by Cory's shearwaters, between Portuguese man-o-war we reached them off Capelinhos volcano, and found a pod of at least 11 females and 1 calf drinking milk were diving and mostly socializing in the area.
A 1-2 year-old loggerhead sea turtle was collected for tagging after recovering from a post-rated condition, and a large gelatinous octopus piece of Haliphron atlanticus left by the whales was also collected for post-whale studies.
There was still time for a flying fish during the expedition! What a great trip!
