Great expeditions! Thank you for experiencing this with us and helping us by supporting our research! Today it was possible to collect data on common dolphins (Dephinus delphis) and Sperm whales (Physeter macrophelacus), in the morning, and bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus), sei whale (Balaenoptera borealis), common dolphins (Dephinus delphis) and sperm whales (Physeter macrophelacus) during the afternoon.
Perfect morning weather with a complete view of Faial crater and Pico Island and a great group of Naturalist travelers! We got to see common dolphins socializing as first observations. We continued towards south Pico for a long session tracking a pod of sperm whales, where we could find a nursing female as well as a large group of females that we got to resight. To end on a high note, the female group was following a large male that fluked in front of us. The expedition was a success.
During the afternoon our trip started in a hurry since the lookouts were slowly losing visibility due to the weather. In our way to the sperm whales we still manage to encounter 2 groups of dolphins, bottlenose dolphins, and common dolphins! We reached the sperm whales just in time to see their beautiful flukes!
While waiting for them to resurface we had an unexpected encounter with a sei whale!! After a few minutes, the sperm whales were back on the surface and we stay the rest of the expedition seeing fluke after fluke!
