Great expedition today! Thanks to you we managed to collect data for our monitoring programs, including sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus)!
Sperm whales are the big star of the Azores!
We see them all year round, however, summer and autumn are the best times to see them.
We see mostly groups of females that came back every year to Faial. The ones that we saw today have been hanging out for a few weeks around Faial and Pico island.

Grande expedição hoje! Graças a vós conseguimos recolher dados para os nossos programas de monitorização ambiental, incluindo cachalotes (Physeter macrocephalus)!
Os cachalotes são a principal estrela dos Açores!
Conseguimos ver estes animais durante todo o ano, contudo é no verão e outuno que os avistamentos de cachalotes se tornam frequentes.
A tendência é avistar grupos de fêmeas, existem grupos que regressam ao Faial (ou Açores) todos os anos. O grupo de cachalotes que foi avistado hoje, tem vido a frequentar a mesma zona já há algumas semanas.
