An amazing way to start the weekend!
After a windy cross between #Faial and #Pico we encounter the sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus) at the south of Pico.
We saw at least 5 different animals, where one was a calf probably nursing!
When we were seeing the sperm whales, suddenly a small group, 4 animals, of bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) appear. Unfortunately, we didn't get any good photos of this species.
Our experienced spotter said that he had found some baleen whale so after the sperm whales deep dive we went to look for it!
Sei Whale (Balaenoptera borealis) was the animal that the spotter was seeing! Such an amazing surprise. The archipelago of the Azores is on the south limit of their distribution.
Another surprise was a group of spotted dolphins (Stenella frontalis) appearing right in front of the sei whale! Both of them were probably chasing a bowl of fish.
