|06-07-2019 am| More Sperm whales in the Azores

Updated: Sep 30, 2019

Sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus) were our target species as they are residents in the Azores.

Today we saw several adult females with juveniles and calfs

Some individuals showed a diving behavior.

While diving, the Sperm whales show the end of the caudal (the fluke) and we use it to identify the different individuals.

Between dives they spend an average of 10 minutes at the surface.

They breath, emiting this blow, to recover the recover oxygen levels, storaging in their muscles.

There was also an adult male in the area.

Females kept coming up to the surface and we could see a beautiful three-synchronized dive!

Afterwords we observed a sub-pod with three Bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus). Perhaps foraging for fish away from the rest of the group.
